Around Crail

Nestled at the very tip of the East Neuk of Fife, the Royal Burgh of Crail has much to offer visitors. Here are some of the highlights you can find within easy walking distance of the Honeypot:

Crail Museum and Heritage Centre - Just a short stroll from the Honeypot you'll find the Crail Museum and Heritage Centre. It has interesting displays on Crail's relationship with fishing and the sea, plus information on the nearby RAF wartime airbase, HMS Jackdaw, the best preserved wartime airbase in Scotland. Also featured is the Crail golfing society, the 7th oldest Golf Club in the world.

Crail Pottery - Just down the street is Crail Pottery, featuring a wide display of works, plus the added interest of a working kiln which fires most days. Set around the famous pot and flower filled courtyard, Crail Pottery offers a cornucopia of irresistible pottery, all hand thrown, in fascinating ancient workshops. Open all year, daily from 10am to 5pm.

Crail Harbour - During the summer, local fisherman sell the day's catch from the harbour. It is said to be one of the most photographed harbours in Scotland, featuring traditional stone construction and a working weather gate.

The Kirk and Blue Stane - Legend has it the devil hurled a large stone (stane) from the Isle of May in the hope of damaging Crail Parish Church. Apparently the stone split in mid air, half landing at the church gate where it still lies. The other half landed near Fife Ness, the most easterly point of Fife.

The Doocot - This unusually shaped structure, dating back to the 16th century, is located on parkland at the end of Nethergate. The Priory Doocot (Pigeon House) was once an important source of year-round food.

19th Century Morthouse - This stone structure is located in the grounds of the Crail Parish Church. Here bodies were stored for several weeks before burial, rendering them useless to the body-snatchers who sold corpses to University anatomists.
